DISAGGREGATION

a long word for a simple and key concept

About 20 years ago storage that lived inside servers began to disaggregate with the advent of SANs (Storage Area Networks). SANs offered significant advantages over Direct-Attached Storage (DAS) inside to servers in the form of improved manageability, better utilization and lower costs.

Fast-forward to today and the rapid adoption of NVMe SSDs, which enable the deployment of ultra-low latency parallel applications.  But guess what?  SSDs are primarily deployed as DAS.

NVMe-over Fabrics™ is a standards-based protocol providing SAN-like benefits for performance storage. This second wave of NVMe adoption is called disaggregation.
